Clybourne Park wins MasterCard Best New Play
First published: 13 Mar 2011
Bruce Norris’s provocative satire Clybourne Park has won the much coveted accolade for MasterCard Best New Play at this year’s Olivier Awards with MasterCard.
The comedy is currently playing at the Wyndham’s Theatre after transferring to the West End following a critically acclaimed run at the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs at the Royal Court Theatre in September.
Norris’s play explores the fault line between property and race. In 1959, a black couple moving into a neighbourhood causes ripples of discontent. 50 years later the same property is being bought by a young white couple whose plans to knock the house down and start again causes similar problems.
With a stellar cast including Sophie Thompson, Martin Freeman, Sarah Goldberg and Lucian Msmati, Clybourne Park was acclaimed for its humorous take on a political correctness.
Clybourne Park was directed by Laurence Olivier Award-winning director Dominic Cooke and boasts four nominations at this year’s awards.
