We Will Rock You wins BBC Radio 2 Audience Award

Published 13 March 2011

Guitars will be thrashed in celebration as long-running Queen musical We Will Rock You wins the BBC Radio 2 Olivier Audience Award.

The rock musical, which has called the Dominion theatre home since 2002, triumphed in the only category decided entirely by members of the public who have been voting via www.olivierawards.com

We Will Rock You, which features the music of British rock royalty Queen alongside a story by Ben Elton, is set in a futuristic world where rock music is banned and where a group of rebels, the Bohemians, hope for a hero.

Accepting the award, Queen guitarist Brian May said: “Thank you to the tremendous talent that has come through our door and kept us rocking throughout the years.”

The axe-wielding, leather-clad, voluminously-coiffured musical came out top in the category which saw more than 43,000 votes cast, beating a shortlist including Billy Elliot The Musical, Jersey Boys and Les Misérables.
