After The Dance wins Best Costume Design

Published 13 March 2011

The National Theatre has taken home the Best Costume Design Award for its production of Terence Rattigan’s After The Dance.

Designed by Hildegard Bechtler, After The Dance was pitched against Love Never Dies, Design For Living and fellow National Theatre nominee London Assurance.

Bechtler’s work for Thea Sharrock’s production complemented the glamorous drama with an enviable wardrobe packed full of stylish, silk dresses, fur coats, dapper suits and the most decadent of bedroom attire. When blended with the show’s lavish set and the actors’ subtle performances, the Lyttelton stage was transformed to the height of 1930s elegant society.

This is the first Olivier Award win for Bechtler. The designer has worked extensively in London theatre on productions including current shows Cause Célèbre at the Old Vic and the Apollo Theatre’s Blithe Spirit.
